How I Got Over

Posted on 05.22.2013

This past week I have been thinking about the past. My mind is focused on how good God has been. The verse I often quote is, “God is good and what He does is good.” God is the essence of goodness and there is no one good but God.

None of us can share everything that He has done for us. However, as I look back over my life, I am moved by the remembrance of His hand of protection over me. I recall wondering where He was during times of difficulty. I had to remind myself that even though I may not have felt Him, He was there. Whenever the challenge was over, I would see clearly that He had been there the whole time! I did not feel Him. I knew He was there by faith.

Don’t you recall how hard it was for you during your trials?

Do you ever wonder how you got through?

I can wonder how I made it through, but of course I know it was the Lord! Yet, that feeling I get thinking about the difficulties of the past often causes me to shake my head in bewilderment as I remember those dark days—I wonder how I got over! From one challenge to the next, the Lord proved Himself to me.  When I was a teenager, we used to sing a song that went like this:

Over, over!

My soul looks back and wonders how I got over!

I did not quite understand it then, but I do now.

Let’s recount our blessings of the past and remember that God has not changed! He is still with us. As we look around us and see so much chaos, God is still here and very much in control of the world. Furthermore, He is still in control of your world and all of our individual circumstances. His name is Faithful and True, especially to those of us who are His followers.

Today, just pause for a few minutes and think about the pain and difficulty of the past. This exercise will rekindle your fire and your faith for today and for your future. God still looks to be who He is: Good. Let us all remain faithful to Him and show Him that we trust Him with our past and our futures!

Psalm 107:8-9 says, “Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.”
