A Song Is What I Needed

Posted on 05.29.2013

There are times when we feel that our lives are getting out of control. You know what I mean—too many crises back-to-back, too many social events to attend during the same time period, product deadlines, work schedules, rehearsal schedules, doctors appointments, homework, sports events, and long, difficult hours at work! Sometimes we can’t control our schedules! We are just doing what we have to do to fulfill our temporal and eternal obligations—our calling. Everyone can relate.

During these times, our physical energy can be at a low, which can lead to mental and emotional fatigue. One of the things I turn to for help, like many of you, is music. I will sing one of my all-time favorite songs!  This particular song was written by two gentleman, Keith Getty from Northern Ireland, and Stuart Townsend from England. The lyrics cause a frog to form in my throat and tears to flow from my eyes instantly. It has been my personal theme song for the past seven years. The music is beautiful with its Irish melody. The words, a powerful statement of the Christian faith, can serve as its credo. Overall, the song fills me with joy, strength, and hope. Singing it leaves me refreshed and ready to journey on in life! Today, I needed this song, “In Christ Alone”:

In Christ alone, my Hope is found,

He is my Light, my Strength, my Song.

This Cornerstone, this Solid Ground,

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of Love, what depths of Peace,

When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!

My Comforter, my All in All,

Here in the Love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe.

This Gift of Love and Righteousness,

Scorned by the ones He came to save.

‘Til on the cross as Jesus died,

The wrath of God was satisfied.

For every sin, on Him was laid,

Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground, His body lay.

Light of the world, by darkness slain.

Then, bursting forth, in glorious day,

Up from the grave He rose again!

And as He stands in victory,

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me.

For I am His, and He is mine,

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,

This is the pow’r of Christ in me.

From life’s first cry, to final death,

Jesus commands my destiny!

No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,

Can ever pluck me from His hand!

‘Till He returns or calls me home,

Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand!

As you go through the rest of this week, remember these words. I conclude once again: There is no one other than Christ for whom I live! Without Him, I cannot live!
