Evidence of God’s Power

Several years ago, my pastor (Roger Whitlow) taught a series on Joshua.  This series was one of the best I have ever heard.  Every session during that series, I would leave Sunday service amazed at how the Holy Spirit would bring deep revelation to us through him.  Many of us have likely had the experience in which familiar passages of scripture are taught from a different perspective, one that we have never heard before.  I learned many truths from from Pastor Roger, one of which I am reminded of each day.

This truth comes from Joshua, chapters 1 and 2.  Briefly, this is the account of when the Israelites were about to cross the Jordan to enter the “Promise Land” or the land of Canaan.  Joshua, their leader had sent spies to go and inspect the land near Jericho. The Israelites were going to engage in warfare in order to take over the land.  During the spies’ mission, they encountered Rahab, a prostitute, pagan and Canaanite.  Rahab ended up hiding the spies on her roof and helping the spies escape after someone had alerted the king of Jericho that there were spies in their land.  What is most interesting to me is Rahab’s conversation with the spies (Joshua 2:8-11):

Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.  When we heard of it, our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.”

After Rahab acknowledged the True God of Israelites, she went on and asked that when they came back to take the land, that she and her family be spared and saved from death (Joshua 12-23).

Every day that we get out of bed and get out into the world, we have a very special opportunity to spread the words of life and hope and “good news” with others. People want to see the evidence of God’s power in our lives.  They want to manifestation of God in our lives­–that He exists, that He is real and that he loves them. Those who have not yet accepted Jesus as Savior have heard about Jesus and about Christianity.  “Pre-Christians” have heard good things about God and they want to believe that there really is hope for them.  They are waiting for us to tell them.  Some wait for us to not only tell them, but to grab them by the hand and lead them to the Savior. Rahab was a prostitute and she caught hold of the True and Living God!  Let us not underestimate who may come to Christ by seeing His work in our lives!

I am encouraged to continue sharing the hope of the Savior.  Each day I pray others will see the Light of Christ in me so that they will join the family of God.  Servants of Christ, get up,  “go into the land” and let your lives share the “Good News!”
